Mobile app entrepreneurship competition for young women
Women are underrepresented among computer science engineers and technology leaders. Only 18% of computer science majors are women, only 7% of leadership positions in tech are held by women and only 7% of tech company founders are women.
With a $435,000 grant, Technovation is expanding its mobile app entrepreneurship competition for young women ages 10 to 23. Students create a mobile apps to solve a problem in the community. The curriculum is free online and over 1,000 volunteer teachers and mentors deliver it to students all over the world.
Technovation has successfully developed young women’s competence and confidence in technology: its programs have 2,000 alumnae from over 45 countries around the world. Moreover, most students had never taken any computer science courses before the program, but 70% of alumnae signed up for computer science courses when offered the opportunity.
